A Plainwell man pleaded guilty to drug charges, which happened his wife called police on him.

Shawn Dean Elsey, 40, pleaded guilty Monday, Sept. 18, to attempted possession of methamphetamine.

Elsey admitted to the crime in court, while appearing via video link from the Allegan County Correctional Facility.

“I was going to leave and go see my grandson,” he said. “My wife thought I was on something, so she called the police.

“They found about $10 worth of methamphetamine on me.”

The officers arrested him at his home on West Bridge Street in Plainwell, he said.

Judge Margaret Zuzich Bakker accepted the plea and set a sentencing hearing for Monday, Nov. 6, 9 a.m.

As part of a plea agreement, charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana were dropped.

Elsey’s lawyer, Christopher Elton Burnett, asked for his client’s bond to be reduced to a personal recognizance bond, saying he had no history of failing to appear for court.

Bakker denied that request, citing Elsey’s record, but did modify the $10,000 bond to a 10 percent bond.
